Finding a Better Way

Stephen & Maranda Cheung, of Richmond, BC, have built their life around spreading good news. “Each day, we experience growth on all fronts,” says Steve. “From within our family and community, to the ministries we serve, we’re able to witness what people are able to accomplish when they know that they’re working for a purpose.”

Today, the Cheungs live relatively worry-free.1 “But that hasn’t always been the case,” says Steve. “Like most families in Hong Kong in the early 1950’s, my family grew up penniless. I experienced a lot of hardship growing up, including having narrowly escaped drowning during a mega typhoon in 1962. I watched my family and community lose their property and belongings. It was devastating, but with good teachers and hard work, I eventually became an overseas student at one of the top schools in the world.”

After hopping around the technology industry, Steve decided to go full-time with Primerica in 1994. 2,3 He started off slowly, before ramping up his focus on empowering others. “We did what you’d expect, which was adopt a business mindset and focus on long-term goals. But the light switch still hadn’t switched on yet. By that I mean, we didn’t yet realize that many families could recover from their financial struggles if they had the same path. From then on, we felt a huge responsibility to share the opportunity that was so freely given to us.”

He continues, “On the surface, some may seem shocked at the vast amount of happiness we bring to our lives and career. They may not understand the business we’ve built – a seemingly well-oiled machine – and the way we operate, but it always comes down to helping families create a better future. If you look just underneath the surface, we’ve got a laser sharp focus, sincere conviction and the intense drive to help more and more families find a better way of life.”

Steve and Maranda count themselves among the thousands of men and women who once wanted more for their families, and were fortunate to have found an opportunity to thrive with Primerica. “Before Primerica, most of them were burnt out, tired of the same results, and felt there was little hope – and not a lot of guidance or support,” Steve says. “Our hope is that everyone, especially those desperate for a chance, can believe in the opportunity. We hope you’ll hear our story and be persuaded to say, ‘Yes, it’s possible for our family, too.’”
