Against All Odds
Scrolling through his social media three years ago, 20-year-old Andrew saw a post about Primerica. “It caught my attention,” he says. “I had been washing cars for seven years and wanted to do something more with my life.”
Andrew, who had to drop out of school at age 13 to support himself, says he was from a broken home in Mid City, CA, an area known for its above average violent crime rate. “My life could have turned out so differently,” reflects Andrew.
Andrew and Yuli first met at church when they were children. Yuli recalls she was also in the process of bettering her life when she discovered Primerica. “I was set to graduate from college when I joined Andrew at Primerica,” she recalls. “My parents were Mexican immigrants and really believed a college degree was the only path to success. I graduated from college and became licensed with Primerica in the same week. I told Andrew and my parents that I would work with Primerica for one year, reassess at that point, and probably go back to my dream of becoming a schoolteacher.”
The First Year
“As a kid, my grades were never good enough to allow me to play sports,” remembers Andrew. “But I was a born competitor! Primerica gave me an opportunity to train, compete and work to become the best on the team!” Within seven months, the couple became Regional Vice Presidents and were well on their way to building a successful business.
“I don’t think any other company would have given a person like me an opportunity to completely change my life,” Andrew recounts. “I had nothing when I started. That made me – and soon my entire team – work to be successful in our business!”
Yuli adds, “When it came time to reassess my intentions, I told my parents I was going to stick with Primerica. Instead of teaching in a classroom, I would teach people about finances at their kitchen tables. “My greatest desire was to help people and Primerica gave me an avenue to do just that.”
Showing Up for Those in Distress
Today, Andrew and Yuli, focus on helping families that live in the same – or worse – neighborhoods that Andrew once lived. “We go to the people that others would dismiss,” says Andrew. “But they need us as much, if not more than, the others. Many of our clients have small businesses and don’t have any benefits at all. The idea of saving for retirement and having life insurance never even occurs to them.” Yuli adds, “We also get such a sense of satisfaction helping young people like us start out with the right kind of protection, savings and a financial education that will serve them all their lives.”
Andrew and Yuli were able to help one family in particular that often comes to mind. “My neighbor, who was also my nanny growing up, sold tamales on the street,” explains Andrew. “Her husband was a plumber. They made $1,000 per month. They had no savings, no life insurance and knew nothing about finances. We were able to teach them the financial concepts that are often reserved for the rich. Thirty months later, my neighbor died in a tragic accident. Her husband said he would never have been able to bury his wife and continue on without Primerica.”
Continuing the Crusade
At the ages of 24 and 25, Yuli and Andrew see many successful years ahead of them as they build their Primerica careers. “We want to help as many people as we can,” Andrew says. “We have an amazing team that has joined our crusade of reaching out to people that others overlook. We fight to educate as many people as possible and make them aware of the business opportunity with Primerica. For us, it has been completely life changing.”
