Driven to Succeed

David & Joyce Kim
Bellerose, NY
Former Occupation: Information Technology

A career in financial services wasn’t what David & Joyce Kim, of Bellerose, NY, sought after when they were younger, but it became the lifesaver they needed to create a bright future together.1, 2

“Before Primerica, I didn’t know anything about life insurance, investments and mortgages,” says David. “The only thing I did have was a lot of debt from student loans and credit cards. Thank God for this business, as I was not only able to learn about savings and debt management, but I also became completely debt free.”3, 4, 5

While all of his college friends majored in finance and worked in the industry after graduation, David had no interest in following that career path. Instead, he earned a bachelor’s degree in information technology from Pace University and focused on that profession until 2003. “I didn’t fully understand the Primerica opportunity at first, but I wanted to learn about money and finance because my college education never provided that knowledge,” he explains. “I was very young when I started in the business, so I wasn’t aware that the only way I could help justify all of the sacrifices my parents made to immigrate to the United States and raise a family here was for me to become successful.”

A SENSE OF PURPOSE
As the eldest of three sisters, Joyce’s parents wanted her to become a lawyer, but she found her calling in financial services shortly after earning an economics degree in college. It was through Primerica where she and David first met and eventually got married. Both are thankful for the leaders who guided them early on in their careers. “I could not have made it without the mentors I had in Primerica,” adds David. “The examples I had were incredible. Joyce and I did have to make sacrifices as young adults to focus on building our business. We can look back now and justify those choices because of where we are and who we became in the process.” The couple have maintained a strong business for more than two decades, yet they’re eager to do more.

“Although there are people who mean well by sharing financial concepts with their friends and families, they may not be the best solutions,” they explain. “Not only do we know that Primerica’s How Money Works™ financial education guide is a gamechanger, but we can also help families put action to intent by implementing these concepts.6, 7, 8 As the saying goes, ‘Knowledge is not power, but the application of it is.’”

They continue, “Most families know that saving money is good and debt is bad. But then why do so many have no savings and a lot of debt? Part of it is knowledge, but the other part is having a game plan and a vehicle to execute it. Throughout our time in the business, we’ve helped many families to retire financially independent, deliver money to their widows and provide a way for their children to attend college. I wholeheartedly know what we do is true and just, and I believe the best way to pay it forward is to share Primerica’s financial principles and the gift of the business opportunity with more people.”

STEADFAST FAITH
Through Primerica, David and Joyce found the success and sense of purpose they searched for as young adults. They say the freedom of time they enjoy through their Primerica business is a rare, priceless commodity that isn’t available with many other career options. “It sounds cool when you hear the words ‘freedom of time’ but it’s 10,000 times better when you get to experience it,” Joyce shares. She also points out how their definition of success extends beyond financial independence. “This business has taught us to always have a growth mindset, which has translated into every aspect of our lives. We’ve benefitted not only from a wonderful career, but also a platform where we can strive to become the best versions of ourselves.”

Their faith in the Primerica system remains unshakeable because of the Company’s unwavering core values. “There are many financial companies out there, but you cannot duplicate Primerica’s business model for two key reasons: the people and the mission,” David reflects. “Primerica was founded to right a wrong in an industry that was taking advantage of families. The end goal isn’t solely about profitability. From the time we joined to where we are today, the intent is still centered around the people and the mission. We have so much pride in what we do and who we represent to clients every day. There is only ONE Primerica.”
