Dan & Kate DeFeo
West Bridgewater, MA
Former Occupation: Mechanic/Student
Former Income: $10,000
Primerica Income: $575,455*

Nothing But the Best
A few years ago, Dan and Kate DeFeo, of West Bridgewater, MA, were like many young couples. They worked average jobs – Dan as a mechanic and Kate as a social worker – and often struggled financially. “We lived in a 400-square-foot apartment on the second floor of an old farmhouse,” recalls Kate. “The bathroom was so tiny you practically ran into the toilet just stepping through the door. The shower was a 3×3 foot stall. Our ‘living room’ was just a small room with a kitchen so Dan bought this horrible couch for something like $25 to divide it into a living area and kitchen.”

Dan continues, “It had one small bedroom and no air conditioning. We finally bought a window unit but it didn’t really work – so it was hot in the summer. Kate drove an old stick shift car with vinyl seats and no air conditioner so you can imagine how that was in hot weather!”

Like a lot of people, the DeFeos had a deep desire to “be somebody” and to create the kind of lifestyle that would allow them to give their future family the best life possible. But they just didn’t know how. That’s when they heard about the Primerica business opportunity.

Life On Your Own Terms
One of the most compelling things about being a Primerica entrepreneur is having the chance to create the kind of income and lifestyle that you want. Here, your success is entirely up to you – how big you grow your team, how many families you help and how strong your determination to change your life is.

The DeFeos weren’t short on the latter – and their lifestyle today is a testament to not just their work ethic, but also their desire to give their children the best life possible. “When we joined, we were really excited about the possibility of making a lot of money and getting free,” says Dan. “Today, we are still amazed that we have the kind of life that we do!”

The Best of Everything
Dan and Kate have come a long way since their tiny starter apartment. They enjoy a comfortable lifestyle in a 5,500-square-foot, three-story home with a large back yard. But more than the material, their Primerica income gives them options for their family that they never would have had without this business. “The most exciting thing to us about our life because of Primerica is we have complete freedom,” reflects Kate.

She continues, “We no longer have to make decisions for our family based on money. We can give our three kids the best of everything. In fact, my favorite example is when our youngest was born. She developed Respiratory Syncytial Virus and became very sick. I took her to the doctor and they told me she needed to be admitted to the hospital. Because we have been able to purchase the best insurance policy for our family, I was able to take our daughter back to the nice hospital in Boston where she was born and had immediate access to the emergency doctors, with no waiting. That’s just one way Primerica has changed how we live.”

Dan adds, “When our kids want to do some activity, we can afford to give them the best. When you don’t have to make decisions based on money, you can give the people you care about the best of everything!”

Living Free
Primerica is about freedom. It’s why we educate our clients to make better financial choices and it’s the reason entrepreneurs like the DeFeos work so hard to build strong, independent businesses. “I hated going to my mechanic’s job every day and working for someone else,” reflects Dan. “I hated being under someone’s thumb. But here, Kate and I are free. We get to make our own schedule. We get up every day and choose what we want to do. It’s not just that our income allows us to give our family nothing but the best. It’s having the ability to call our own shots in every aspect of our lives. Freedom truly is priceless.”

*Primerica income figures are based upon rolling 12‑month gross cash flow (including advances) as of September 2012. The cash flows stated are not intended to demonstrate the earnings of typical RVPs/representatives. Rather, the cash flows that have been cited reflect the potential that comes with building your business, and there is no guarantee that you will achieve any specific cash flow level. Most RVPs/representatives do not achieve the levels illustrated. In the 12‑month period ending in December 2011, Primerica paid a total of $504,514,944 in compensation to the sales force at an average of $5,544 per licensed representative. Average RVP earnings are typically higher. Actual gross cash flow is, among other factors, dependent upon the size and scale of a representative’s organization, the number of sales and the override spread on each sale, and the ability and efforts of you and your downlines. Having said this, Primerica provides a tremendous opportunity for individuals who work hard and who desire to develop a business with strong income potential.

Former Occupation: Probation Officer
Former Income: $60,000
Primerica Income: $187,622*

Living In the Moment
Life is made up of a million little moments. And each of those moments offers a unique opportunity to make a decision that can change your life. For Tonia Poe, of Irwindale, CA, stumbling across the Primerica business opportunity has taken her down a path she never expected.

“My daughter and I were living with my parents in Compton, CA, in the home I grew up in,” Tonia recalls. “I wanted to move out on my own, but my salary as a probation officer didn’t give me a whole lot of options. Primerica really found me at exactly the right moment because I needed a way to take back control over my own future.”

She continues, “About a year after I joined the business, I took a leap of faith and quit my full-ime job to come full-time in Primerica. It was a decision to rely on myself, not an employer, to provide for myself and my daughter.”

The Little Things
She continues, “Before Primerica, I was like most people. Every decision I made was based on money. That’s what’s changed the most for me because of this business. Little things – things you don’t even think about until you’re in the moment, like choosing, based solely on the cost, between a generic and a brand name at the grocery store. Or picking the cheapest pack of gum at the checkout instead of the kind you’d prefer. To me, those little things are the most profound changes about my life now compared to my life before.”

“You Can Do That In Primerica”
Tonia’s life today is completely different than it was before she became an entrepreneur. That moment of personal crisis that sparked her need to take control of her own future has blossomed into a growing business – and a whole new mindset. One moment and Primerica changed everything. “My life is completely different in every way because of Primerica,” says Tonia. “Most of all it’s my mindset that has changed. Money isn’t at the forefront of my mind like it used to be. One of my favorite moments so far in this business is when my old car broke down while I was driving it, for the last time. I didn’t even think about it – I just drove myself to the dealership and left that night with a new car.

“If that had happened while I was still working as a probation officer, that whole experience would have been filled with stress – how would I pay for repairs? Where would I get the money for a down payment on a new car. But because of the financial principles I’ve learned and put into practice and because of the income I’ve earned through Primerica, I didn’t give it any thought. I needed a new car and I bought one. It’s hard to live like that working for someone else. But you can do that in Primerica.”

Susan & Art Carreon
Riverside, CA
Former Occupation: Sales Representative
Former Income: $16,000
Primerica Income: $492,161*

Finding a New “American Dream”
Before they found Primerica, Susan and Art Carreon were like many middle-income families. They thought they were doing the right things to build a comfortable life – they worked hard, owned their own home and gave their three young daughters the best they could. But following the traditional path to the “American Dream” required sacrifices. “I worked in the corporate world for 21 years,” Art says. “I’d have to leave the house at 1:00 a.m. every morning and wouldn’t get home until 3:00 p.m. I hated missing all that time with our girls in the morning so I’d make sure I was there for them in the afternoons, coaching their sports and things like that. But it wasn’t enough.”

Susan continues, “Family is very important to us, and we did what we needed to in order to provide a good life for our three daughters – so Art’s job served its purpose. But we wanted a better life. When I came across the Primerica business opportunity, Art and I thought it would be a good way to get that.”

Freedom of Time
The Primerica business opportunity offers families like the Carreons the chance to build a business and create a life of freedom for themselves. But freedom doesn’t just mean having the potential for a great income – it’s also the chance to live life on your own terms, to have the freedom of time to focus on the people who are the most important to you. For the Carreons, the turning point in their lives happened early one morning. “About five years into the business, I got a call from Art at 6:00 a.m.,” recalls Susan.

“We had set a game plan in place when I first joined the business that when I earned enough to replace his $72,000 income that he would come into the business with me full-time. I had reached $103,000 in income through our Primerica business and that morning he called me from the office to say he was retiring himself from his job. That was an incredible moment for our whole family!”

Art continues, “I’d had enough of missing out on so much of my family’s life. It was such a relief to take all the efforts I’d been putting in for someone else’s benefit and instead put that hard work into building something with Susan for our own future. I don’t regret those years in the corporate world – my income allowed me to support my family. But finding Primerica truly changed our future and gave us our lives back.”

Changing the Dynamic
Today, the Carreons are living an incredible life. They’re building a family business with their three adult daughters and they enjoy the freedom of calling their own shots. “I love that because of Primerica we don’t have to worry about money,” reflects Art. “We have the freedom to do what we want, when we want and with whom we want. For me, the best part is having the time to develop relationships with people around me. I never really had the opportunity to do that before because I was giving so much of my time to an employer.”

Susan adds, “We still don’t live a lavish lifestyle. We follow the principles that Primerica teaches as far as investing and saving for our future, but we do love to travel – it’s one of our passions, in fact. Our Primerica business has given us the means to see the world and to share those experiences with the people we love. My mother died when I was 26, having never been able to travel or enjoy much time with her family. And Art didn’t get to see his dad very much because of his work, so Primerica has given us the chance to change the entire dynamic of our family relationships. Now, we get to share amazing experiences with our loved ones because Primerica enables us to do so!”

Jeff & Kelcey Fieldstad
Las Vegas, NV
Former Occupation: Advertising

On the surface, it would seem unlikely that a couple of young adults barely out of high school would have the experience or qualifications necessary to become successful business owners.* In fact, in the corporate world, those things might be viewed as a disadvantage. But fortunately for Jeff and Kelcey Fieldstad, of Las Vegas, NV, Primerica doesn’t care about what’s on the surface. This business was made for what’s on the inside – a person’s heart, determination and drive to make a difference.

“I was almost 21, still living with my family in our single-wide trailer, when I joined Primerica,” reflects Jeff. “Kelcey, also living at home, was 19. We were like most people our ages, we had big dreams of how we wanted our lives to be. When the Primerica business opportunity came along, we saw it as the vehicle to take us to those goals – and it’s more than lived up to that expectation.”

“Feels Like We’re In a Movie”
Nearly eight years later, the couple is married, leading a thriving business and living a very comfortable life in downtown Las Vegas. “I doubt we’d be able to afford to even rent the condo we live in right now if it weren’t for Primerica,” says Jeff. “We live in a high rise overlooking the Las Vegas Strip. It has everything – 24-hour security, a full-time concierge, a valet who parks our cars and maid service to clean our house. I feel like we’re in a movie or something sometimes.”

Kelcey adds, “Because of what we’ve done with our Primerica business, we don’t worry about money. When we want to go on vacation, we go. I recently bought my dream car, because we have the means to do so. Primerica has given us options – options that give us the freedom to do the things we want or need without stressing about the cost. And it’s not just the big things we have the freedom to enjoy – it’s the little things too, like choosing to go to yoga classes whenever I want to and however many times I want to go. We wouldn’t have any of this if it weren’t for Primerica.”

Freedom to Give Back
Through their Primerica business, the Fieldstads have the freedom to live life on their own terms – a freedom they love to share with the people they care about. “We love having the ability to give back to our parents,” smiles Kelcey. “One of our favorite trips was taking our moms to the Bahamas. We had no budget, we just went and did whatever we wanted. We went on excursions, we saw amazing things, and we got to share it all with them.”

Jeff adds, “My mom had never been out of the state before, so getting to take her someplace like the Bahamas was a really special moment for me. It’s an incredible feeling, having the freedom to live our lives how we choose, on our own terms. Primerica gives us that chance.”

Life is unpredictable and there’s no way to prepare for every challenge you might face. The one thing you CAN do is decide that no matter what happens, you are going to take control of your own attitude and outlook – and keep moving forward!

Janet & Douglas Schroer, of Denver, CO, are great examples of leaders who experienced some significant obstacles but chose to focus instead on what is important to them: each other and building their business.

In 2003, a month after the pair were married, they were involved in a car accident on the way to a training appointment that left Janet with a mild but untreated brain injury that eventually led to significant health issues. “My health insurance wouldn’t cover treatment for nearly two years,” says Janet. “By the time I finally got the medical help I needed, I was having vision issues, and cognitive and physical problems.”

Despite the medical challenges, Janet and Douglas continued to grow their business because they firmly believed in what they were doing. “When I saw how little I knew about money before Primerica, I just HAD to learn more,” explains Janet. “I used to work as a purchasing agent but just seeing the concepts Primerica educates families on made me a huge crusader for teaching others to make sound financial decisions for their families.”

Six years after the accident Janet was fully recovered and their Primerica business was on track to help them reach their goals. Then, it happened again. “On August 8, 2010, my husband and I were in a motorcycle accident where he broke his back and I learned to fly!” recalls Janet. “We had just gotten back into the swing of things with our business and then this happened! So we moved to Las Cruces, NM, to stay with a friend and heal in the warm weather.”

As before, the Schroers put their injuries aside and let their “no excuses” attitude kick in. “We opened an office, started from scratch and got our cash flow up over the $50,000* level in less than a year!”

Today, this pair is charging full speed ahead back in Colorado where they started and they couldn’t be more excited about their future. “We have an amazing upline, who is so encouraging to us,” says Janet. “This business has changed everything for us. There is no way I would have had a job waiting for me after all those health challenges. Here, despite being laid up, our business continued to produce cash flow and we have the freedom to build our business wherever we are. This is the greatest opportunity in the world and we are surrounded by great people!”
